Empowering Growth Through Talent Development and Driving the Future with Co-creation Mindset—A Chronicle of Green Company’s “Co-creative Reading Workshop”
To foster in-depth communication and intellectual advancement within the management team, Green Company, in collaboration with Human Resources Department No. 2, is specially hosting a “Co-creation Reading Workshop” focused on Ram Charan’s classic work, “The Leadership Pipeline: Building the Leadership-Driven Company.” By combining theoretical study with practical application, this workshop aims to build consensus and clarify the direction for the company’s leadership development and future growth.
At the start of the event, a fun and collaborative mini-game quickly livened up the atmosphere. Fifteen managers were divided into three teams, each simulating the team structure of “General Manager—Manager—Employee.” Working under constraints on communication, they collaborated to achieve their goals, gaining a direct experience of the core values of hierarchical coordination and effective communication, thus laying a solid foundation for the subsequent in-depth discussions.
During the subsequent book analysis session, participants engaged in an in-depth discussion centered on the core ideas of "The Leadership Pipeline." The book’s “Six-Stage Model of Leadership”—which spans from managing oneself to managing others, managing managers, managing functional departments, managing business units, and ultimately reaching group-level executives—systematically reveals the competency requirements and growth paths for leaders at different levels. This framework provides Green Company with a scientifically grounded perspective for assessing the current state of its management team. Drawing on the theories presented in the book, team members focused their discussions on the company’s current management pain points through targeted deliberations: addressing issues such as unclear role definitions for managers at certain levels, insufficient cross-departmental collaboration efficiency, and a weak pipeline of potential managerial talent. By comparing these challenges against the standards set forth in the "Leadership Pipeline" model, they meticulously analyzed the root causes one by one.
Based on the wisdom from books and real-world challenges, everyone has further clarified the core directions for enhancing the company’s leadership. First, we will strengthen the alignment between hierarchical roles and competencies: by benchmarking against the competency models outlined in relevant literature and aligning them with the core responsibilities of each management position, we will optimize talent selection and assessment criteria to ensure that managers’ capabilities precisely match job requirements. Second, we will establish a systematic development framework: designing tiered training programs tailored to managers at different levels, and using methods such as case-based learning and post-event reviews to help them overcome capability bottlenecks. Third, we will refine communication and collaboration mechanisms: drawing on the lessons learned from highly effective teamwork in gaming, we will set up regular cross-departmental communication channels and goal-alignment processes to break down information silos. Fourth, we will improve our talent pipeline: placing greater emphasis on identifying promising employees from the grassroots level and cultivating them through rotational assignments, mentorship programs, and other initiatives, thereby building a sustainable leadership talent pipeline.
This “co-creation reading workshop” not only deepened the Green Company’s management team’s understanding of leadership development, but also, through the collision of theory and practice, helped them identify pathways to overcome management challenges. Moving forward, the company will take the principles outlined in “The Leadership Pipeline” as its guiding framework, translating the insights gained from the workshop into concrete actions, effectively implementing and accelerating the development of a robust leadership pipeline, and driving the company’s high-quality growth with enhanced managerial effectiveness.
